This Is the Fastest Subaru BRZ in the World

Drag racing professional driver Ali Afshar will try to break a record May 5th at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in his beefed up 2013 Subaru BRZ.

18-time NHRA champion Ali and his team will be the first and only to race a 7 second 1/4 mile (400 m) pass down the strip in an all-wheel drive Subaru. The car is powered by a 2.4-liter 4 cylinder boxer engine that can produce an incredible 1400 hp. It also has all the right parts for the event, such as very wide slick wheels, a rollcage, a massive wing at the back and a wheelie-bar.

The event at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will be open for every driver that owns a Subaru, competing in four classes: All Motor Subaru, Street Subaru, Modified Subaru and Extreme Subaru. The gates open at 8:00 a.m and the racing begins at 9:30 a.m. Competing fee is $80 and admission is $17.

Subaru Design Boss Talks WRX Concept: Video

Subaru has been telling us for a while that the next-generation WRX will not be just a hopped up Impreza, and it used the 2013 New York Auto Show to give us our first glimpse of this with the WRX Concept.

While we've spied the next-generation Subaru WRX undergoing testing, the WRX Concept gives us an idea of what the design of this future sports car will look like.

During the New York Auto Show Subaru's General Manager of Design Osamu Namba took a moment to talk about the design of the WRX Concept.

Namba specifically notes the bold front end featuring Subaru's traditional hexagon grille and new hawk-eye headlights. He also noted the flared front and rear wheel arches which help define the WRX, and we personally think these give the concept a planted, aggressive stance.

We weren't sure when we saw the concept if the 20-inch alloy wheels would make it to production, but during the video Namba makes a point to mention how the concept's wheels play a pivotal role in hinting how the vehicle's been designed.

Enthusiasts may not like hearing it, but we were told at the auto show that the next-generation WRX will likely be a bit more biased toward on-road-only performance than the current WRX. This is because Subaru has backed away from the global rally stage.

While this concept is likely longer, wider, and dramatic than the production car will be, we can't help but be excited about the next-generation WRX.

The Subaru "Forrest"er

A delightful slow burn is sweeping Reddit as people share this photo of an intricate pop culture puzzle in the form of a license plate on a car. Here are some hints: The car is a Subaru Forester. The license plate is a slightly incorrectly spelled abbreviation for "Lieutenant Dan." The back license plate holder, Reddit commenters have pieced together, allegedly reads "Run Forrest Run." Is it coming together for you yet? And, obviously, the coup de grace is the license plate holder line "I brought you some ice cream." It’s hard to imagine the level of dedication to a movie this sort of thing takes, making us wonder who’s behind the wheel. Anyone know what kind of car Tom Hanks drives?

The New WRX Concept Shows Off Subaru’s New Design Language

Osamu Namba, the Subaru design chief, made a surprise appearance at the New York International Auto Show last week for the unveiling of the new WRX concept. In an interview at the company’s stand, he said the car presented the company’s new design language, parts of which were seen in the Viziv concept shown at the Geneva auto show in March. As the most extreme of Subaru designs, the WRX offers the company a chance to render the new vocabulary in striking form.

Mr. Namba said the name of the new look is Dynamic Solidity. Speaking through a translator, he said the two-part phrase echoed formulations like Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” or Lexus’s “L finesse.”

By tradition, Subarus are known for solid dependability. Touting all-wheel drive and boxer engines, many past models have worn homeliness proudly, giving cargo capacity, road clearance and ruggedness priority over aesthetics. Dynamic Solidity takes Subaru’s styling in a new direction.

“It has to be dynamic,” Mr. Namba said of the new look. “It says performance, but Subaru performance tradition.”

Subaru’s performance pedigree turns on the flat four boxer engines and full-time all-wheel drive offered on the company’s vehicles. Subaru’s new lines visually widen the new WRX concept’s face, bringing a lower look to the vehicles than seen on previous models. The wheel arches are large, to emphasize all-wheel drive.

“We have kept the hexagonal grille, of course,” Mr. Namba said. He pointed out the square, LED-bracketed headlights flanking the grille, which is filled with a three-dimensional mesh pattern. Subaru’s “star cluster” logo floats in the grille’s center.

“These shapes go through to the rear,” he said, comparing the front bracket form lights to similar bracket shapes echoed on the rear lights. The low, wide diffuser in back also mimics the grille and lower front side vents.

A big air intake and hood bulge add cartoonish features to the powerful looking WRX, more or less in keeping with typical concept car exaggeration. Even the company’s characteristic bright blue paint has been dialed up with a new metallic hue called WR Blue Pearl III. The sparkly blue is offset with bright fluorescent yellow exhaust tips and brake calipers. There is no danger of the new look Subaru being confused with a Italian roadster.

“The new look is to bring a family consistency,” Mr. Namba said. “This will be on the new models, it will cascade through the line.”

Looking at Subaru’s current model lineup side by side – the chunky, aggressive Impreza compared with the svelte, handsome BRZ coupe, for example – it’s clear that consistency has been lacking in Subaru’s design approach.

In avoiding changes to Subaru’s hexagonal grille, Mr. Namba may be playing it safe. An awkward upright oval grille – last seen on the Tribeca compact S.U.V. – scuttled the last Subaru design revolution, much to the chagrin of the former Subaru design chief Andreas Zapatinas. Ostensibly inspired by jet aircraft, the almost Edsel-eque grille pattern now appears to have been the work of Erwin Himmel, a designer, who began work on the project before Mr. Zapatinas arrived in 2002. Whoever is to blame, the grille was widely derided.

Mr. Zapatinas’s tenure at Subaru lasted until 2006, and the company picked up Mr. Namba from his private firm in 2008. As the new faces of Subaru’s reborn design language, the world is certain to see and hear more of Mr. Namba and the WRX concept.

Subaru's first hybrid: 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid debuts at New York Auto Show

Subaru is coming out with a gas-electric hybrid crossover SUV for the crunchy granola crowd that wants to save fuel but still haul kayaks to the river.

The Japanese brand, which specializes in all-wheel-drive vehicles, unveils the 2014 XV Crosstrek Hybrid on Thursday at the New York International Auto Show.

The company's first gas-electric hybrid gets somewhat better gas mileage than the conventional Crosstrek and has stop-start technology that shuts down the engine at red lights to save fuel. It has all-wheel-drive capability and the same 8.7-inch ground clearance so it can go on trails.

Subaru also will unveil a concept WRX high-horsepower compact car that strongly hints at what the next generation pocket-rocket will look like. The company says this WRX is lower, sleeker and wider with a bigger grille, while it keeps the classic hood scoop with clearance for a new turbocharged engine and air cooler. Subaru didn't say when the new WRX would hit showrooms or give further details.

Here are the highlights of the XV Crosstrek Hybrid:

UNDER THE HOOD: A 2-liter Boxer engine with 148 horsepower, plus a 13.4 horsepower electric motor and a continuously variable transmission that keeps the engine revving in an optimal range for gas mileage and power. The 13.5 kilowatt nickel-metal-hydride battery is under the rear floor, while the electric motor is under the hood just behind the transmission. The hybrid version weighs about 300 pounds more than the gas version. The electric motor starts the car under light acceleration and starts the gas engine once the car is moving. The car can run on electricity alone in low-speed situations.

OUTSIDE: The gas-electric model has hybrid badges on the front edges of the front doors and tailgate and different wheels and tail lamps. Also has a new green pearl exterior color exclusive to the hybrid. The front grille shutter system cuts wind drag at highway speeds.

INSIDE: Passenger cabin is slightly smaller (0.7 cubic feet), as is the cargo space of the hatchback. It's about 2 cubic feet less at just over 50 cubic feet. Hybrid instrument cluster with a blue color scheme, and blue-and-silver interior.

GAS MILEAGE: Subaru expects 28 miles per gallon in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. That's three miles per gallon better in the city than the gas version with an automatic transmission, but only one mpg better on the highway.

PRICE: Will be announced closer to the car's arrival at dealerships in the fall of this year.

CHEERS: Subaru has come up with a hybrid system that can still handle the rigors of going off the road.
